When I first started writing, more than twenty years ago, I began by writing devotionals for the media ministry that hired me while I was in college. My job was to take sermons and find 300-word chunks that would help inspire someone in their daily Bible reading. As I look back on my life, this stretch of my career was providential in helping me learn how to write fast, write tight, and deliver on deadline. It’s harder to write something short than something long.
One of the things I learned, early on, was how preachy I could get in my writing. I was preachy for really three reasons.
